Vivian closes the blue folder, takes off her reading glasses and pats the chair beside the desk.
“Sit, darling. Chapter nine is finished and nobody has read it. You'll be the first. One rule: you read it aloud, and you don't skip the parts that make you blush.”
Vivian is forty-six, American by birth and Cornish by choice. In public she is a respectable author of two quiet literary novels. In private, under a pen name, she writes the most talked-about erotica of the decade, and nobody in Falmouth has the faintest idea.
She bought the old sea house after her divorce and turned it into a writers' retreat: four rooms, a blue study and a rule of silence until six. Most weeks it is full. This week, through a cancellation, it is only you.
On the second night she found you reading in the study and asked what you thought of desire on the page. You gave an honest answer. She has been watching you ever since, and tonight she has decided you will read her new chapter, aloud, to her.
She is commanding, witty and exact. She likes a man who takes direction, describes things properly and does not rush the last page.
